The Boys

GPUs are the new Birkins. Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) are the chips used by companies such as OpenAI and Google to train and run their AI models. Think of them like pool boys - the more of them you have working, the faster you’ll get your cabana and cocktail. The AI frenzy has companies buying them up, much to the benefit of manufacturer Nvidia, whose market cap briefly kissed $1 trillion dollars after blowing sales expectations out of the water. But with a waitlist longer than Hermes’, companies like OpenAI are tampering down expectations for their roadmaps.

AI, but make it Quiet Luxury. Apple hit us with a doozy on Monday, with a lineup of announcements ranging from a new Snoopy watch face to the internet-dividing, wallet-busting Vision Pro headset. Noticeably missing was the use of the tech world’s darling buzzword anywhere in the 2-hour marathon presentation, unlike Google I/O’s 140 flashy mentions of “AI.” Apple took a far more Greenwich Country Club approach, referencing a “neural engine” to refer to its ML tech. Some highlights:

  • Users of the new headset will get an AI-generated avatar who will represent them in the metaverse video calls in VR.

  • Autocorrect is getting an LLM infusion, so it can finally stop saying ‘ducking’ (and also predict entire sentences).

  • Hot dog or not hot dog: automatically create photo albums for pics of your pets, as well as detect nudity in unsolicited Airdrops.

An homage. Loyal readers may have picked up on some familiar web3 themes throughout Apple’s keynote, including retina-scanning Optic ID for digital identification (Worldcoin dupe?), digital twin avatars, and a subtle rebrand of metaverse as “spatial computing.” Noticeably missing? Mark Zuckerberg’s torso floating in a 3rd grader’s Roblox interpretation of Paris.
