I couldn't help but wonder

should AI development be decentralized

bonjour,

Prayers up for those doing NFT NYC.

Deana and I spill on cosmetic treatments and internet stories on this week’s episode of Too Online. Check it here. Literally all I’m doing is working on this, so NYC mark your cal for May 3rd.

bye,

The Boys

I couldn't help but wonder, should AI development be decentralized? Or at least, that’s what Emad Mostaque claims to be pondering these days. The CEO of Stability AI, the company that put Stable Diffusion on the map, resigned on March 22. Initially, the reasons for his resignation varied from legal issues to the hemorrhaging of key talent. But my personal favorite (and Mostaque’s said reasoning) was, decentralize it, babe!

However reports came out this week suggesting his exit was because he was just bad at his job. Bummer. Maybe more than one thing can be true, and hopefully his resignation in an effort to work on decentralized AI will contribute to a larger movement in AI development.

NYC chatbot is a bad boy. In October, NYC Mayor Eric Adams, rolled out an AI action plan for the city. Included in this plan was a chatbot designed to help business owners across the five boroughs navigate the maze of government info. Turns out the chatbot is an idiot and is doling out illegal advice. No, you can’t take your employees' tips. And no, you can’t discriminate against potential tenants based on income source. I genuinely love experimentation and government orgs trying to keep up with the times and implement new tech, so IDK maybe we just let them say sorry.

What do Chappelle Roan and Bob Marley have in common? They are just 2 of the 200 biggest names in music who this week signed a petition urging AI engineers and companies to chill out on the development of AI generating music tools.

The petition, signed by basically every musician you’ve listened to in the last year, states “Some of the biggest and most powerful companies are, without permission, using our work to train AI models. These efforts are directly aimed at replacing the work of human artists with massive quantities of AI-created ‘sounds’ and ‘images’ that substantially dilute the royalty pools that are paid out to artists. For many working musicians, artists and songwriters who are just trying to make ends meet, this would be catastrophic….. This assault on human creativity must be stopped.” Ummm if you ask me creativity is alive and well.
