The Boys

Tis the damn season. This year’s hottest holiday gift just dropped, and reviews are…mid. Humane’s AI Pin (tbt to Naomi Campbell sporting one on the runway) was finally unveiled for $699 plus $24/month. It can do things like summarize recent emails, translate foreign language conversations in real time, and tell almond moms the nutritional contents of their store-bought pesto. With review headlines such as “The $699 AI Pin forgets how humans interact in the real world,” the Pin’s claim to be a “smartphone killer” is sus. Chief concerns include privacy (there’s a camera and microphone built in), usability (the laser display is pretty awkwardly projected on your hand), and accuracy (there were errors in the company’s own damn demo video). Our chief concern is straining our necks to talk into our left boob all day, but sure the other stuff, too.

F you, pay me. Those are basically the terms that ended the Actor’s strike, around use of AI in Hollywood, after a historic 118 days of protesting. Actors’ primary concerns were around AI taking their jobs and unfair compensation from the studios, and the studios were like… well, yeah, the math maths. The terms of the deal include defining new industry lingo around AI such as wtf is a Background Actor Digital Replica, requiring an actor’s consent on if/how AI replicas of them will be used, and ensuring fair compensation for actors whose likenesses are used to train digital replicas. This is great news for actors and audiences alike, as we’re getting pretty tired of watching season three of Suits on Netflix for the 12th time.

Raunchy chatbots. Elon Musk (who, fun fact, happens to be a former OpenAI co-founder) launched his AI chatbot called Grok. Grok will be available to X Premium subscribers for $16/month, and notably will have real-time access to X content, unlike its competitor ChatGPT. Elon is a vocal critic of the left-leaning parameters and guardrails programmed into models such as ChatGPT, referring to it as “woke AI.” Grok is reported to be far more “rebellious”, and it’s personality is programmed to be sarcastic, raunchy, and a probably more than a little degrading. Given it was trained off of Twitter trolls, that checks out.
